The number of free courses has doubled since this review, they are adding very affordable DLC courses, free movement has been added, flying mode, etc. I do think it deserves a higher score!

Thank you for commenting, and, as you say, for disagreeing politely 🙂 I myself (I’m the editor) greatly enjoy Walkabout Mini Golf, and I agree with you that I think it’s a fantastic game. I play it with my son when I’m away from him, and it’s a wonderful experience. However, I’d like to make a couple of points. First of all, if you’ve seen our reviews you know that a 7.5 isn’t a bad score for us, not at all. It just means that we think the game could’ve offered more. Although the core of the game is great, and, in my mind at least, superior to Pro Putt and Cloudlands, we can’t ignore that both other games offer some extras that Walkabout doesn’t, and that, overall, somewhat evens the playing field. Pro Putt has its share of mini-games, and Cloudlands 2 offers its level creator and user-created levels – the value of these additions and extra features can’t be completely ignored 🙂

Having said all that, who knows! We have, in extreme cases, decided to re-review titles. We gave In Death: Unchained a second look after it was tirelessly updated by its developer, and maybe we’ll do the same with Walkabout Mini Golf, depending on what future updates bring!

You have criminally underrated this game! Walkabout is one of the finest experiences on Quest. The game runs super well, and just ‘feels’ right as you play. It’s so beautifully intuitive that its usually the first game I show anyone in VR. The graphics are spot on for what the game is trying to do, and the locations are a pleasure to just be in.

The multiplayer is a fantastic way to unwind and an awesome social experience in its own right. It’s great to have a chat while moving through the courses together, a pleasant change to other games where you are frantically blasting your opponents.

I agree with just about every review on your site (and now excited to pick up Myst on your recommendation too!), but I really think you should re-visit this one. The dev has also added a new course and has more in the works. It certainly deserves a higher score than Cloudlands 2 (and possibly Pro putt… I would actually lower Cloudlands’ score, personally).

As others have pointed out, you are pretty far off the user reviews on this one. Not saying you can’t have your own opinion, of course. But its one of the best rated games on Oculus’ store, averaging well over 9/10, a higher average than even the mighty Beat Saber! I demand a re-trial 😀

The problem with the general trend is that it almost makes scoring meaningless. If all good games are 8 or above, it makes it very difficult to make distinctions in that zone.

In any case, thanks for understanding, and I’d be curious to know how you feel about our scoring of other games 🙂

Regardless of your custom standards the people in general has a fixed idea about what score mean based in the general standards. For example if you review a game that has few other reviews and you scored is used by Metacritic etc it will drop the overal score to the point of making it unatractive to buyers.
And yes, yellow starts in anything below 8 for most of review settings. I think anyway make sense.
5 is Ok but uninteresing. 6 is barely interesting etc. Then what happen is people only want to play games than excel, meaning they are very good. Anthing 8 and above is considered very good and there is little reason to play good having very good games.
I would consider this game below 8 in any other platform other than VR because the lack of competition.
In any case I understand you prefer to stick to your own standards, I simply wanted to make a point as 7.5 means “good”, meaning no worth for most other sites as there are many better games.

Again, what you’re saying is true for sites that pretend to score out of 10 but only really score between 7-10. For us, as indicated by the green on anything that scores above a 7 – anything above 7 is a decent game. Our yellow starts at 6.5, and our red starts at 5 and below. People are so used to reviewers pumping games that now anything less than an 8 is, as you say, considered not worth playing. That’s not how we rate games.

Anything below 8 is tradionally no worth to play. Not because they are bad games, but because there are tons of 8 and above games, Also typically means the game has flaws enough to be only midly enjoyable or only for hardcore fans of the genre.
From that point of view, In the context of the quality and availabiliy to VR games this is certainly a 8 or above.
Yes, this game is really only designed for multiplayer, but I don’t see it too much as a problem. It lacks of incentives for single player except training.
As multiplayer it’s quite fun.

BS comment, which you also felt the need to edit, I see 🙂 We’re glad it’s the best VR game you’ve ever played, but that indicates we’ve played a lot more than you have and expect more from the games we play. A 7.5 is a pretty good score as far as we’re concerned. We properly rate games out of 10, not pretend to so (like many other sites or reviewers do) and then give everything a minimum of 7. We don’t particularly care about the reviews in the Oculus store, and the one thing we’ve always promised our readers is that we don’t pump games.
