Did you bother to look at the date of the review? When the app was reviewed, none of those things could be turned off. We’re sure that it’s seen tons of updates since then, and surely people complaining about missing options – like we did – are part of the reason you now set those options. Perhaps the review is in need of an update, but we’ve got our hands full with other things, I’m afraid. Thanks for your comment, and hopefully, others reading the review will read it as well 🙂

You can turn off the 360 degree arena and have just one portal, you can mute the coach’s voice, you can skip songs, you can skip the lunge bars. Changing the color of the bats? Does that really matter?

This review was written when the game was launched. There was no option at the time to disable squats and lunges. The accessibility settings were added after the review was completed. Admittedly, there have been many changes to Supernatural that address many of the concerns addressed in this review and the review should be updated to reflect that.

This is a fitness workout. Beat Saber (don’t get me wrong I LOVE Beat Saber!) is NOT a fitness game. Yes you burn calories playing it fo sho, but there is a physical “science” behind how the targets in Supernatural come at you and how you are supposed to hit them. It is GEARED towards getting the right muscle groups fired up to make those stronger, this is not the case with Beat Saber.

This is also why the devs of Supernatural can not as easily just let you add your own songs into Supernatural and just have the software generate random balls for you to smack. (Nor can Supernatural do a bunch of the other game suggestions you make, because it would be detrimental for the fitness aspect)
Like another commenter said; if you had the same fitness results from Supernatural as from Beat Saber, then your way of striking was incorrect, THAT’s why you did not get the full results from it. In fact, I actually play Beat Saber when I still want to chop things but I am too sore and drained from working out in Supernatural, I use it as a cool down almost lol… I can still play Beat Saber when super sore; this is not the case with Supernatural.

Now, knowing it is a fitness work out and not a game; compare it to a gym membership. Gyms around my area are $70-$120 A MONTH. Supernatural blows that out of the water. Especially since (for me personally that is) I loathe going to a gym, but love popping on my Quest and I love the, despite it NOT being a game, game-ish aspects of Supernatural.

I was willing to wait and see if they started giving the option to mix up workouts, select songs individually, skip songs, basically everything you mentioned. But the trainers’ voices just threw me over the edge and it ticked me off that I was paying for something that forced me to listen to a bunch of BS rambling. Like you said, nothing they said actually helped with the workout, it was distracting and interfered with the music. However, one major thing that was very wrong in your review is that the workout is like Beat Saber. That statement tells me that you were not, in fact, using the correct form in your workout. In Beat Saber you are flicking your wrists, while in Supernatural you are doing full arm movements from your shoulder down. I did this workout for a month and although I wasn’t someone who needs to lose weight, I actually did lose inches and toned my arms greatly. But again, I was doing the workout correctly. It is nothing like Beat Saber other than the fact that you hit objects in certain directions. Beat Saber’s environment is also horrible. I also don’t feel at all that the experience needs to be more like a game. I actually found the virtual reality, the music, and the sound effects a lot of fun to do and honestly I didn’t care about my score. I’m working out. So while I would like to do workouts that keep me interested and provide a little bit of fun, ultimately I care about how I feel afterward. One thing I think they should do is provide videos on the app or even online showing the trainers doing the various workouts. Like you said, not being able to see how it’s supposed to be done, just leads you to assume you’re doing it right. I was doing the medium and high intensity workouts and some of them had hit patterns that were very awkward and I would have liked to have seen how the trainers were doing them.
If Supernatural allows the trainers to be muted, I would probably renew my subscription. I can’t say that I wouldn’t get bored with it pretty quickly though. I was already getting bored after 2 months. They’re going to have to add the ability for users to personalize their workouts and not treat users like mindless sheep. There was a lot of music on there that I have no desire to listen to, or haven’t even heard of, so that limited the workouts that I could do, especially in the medium and high intensity levels. There were many workouts that included a song I hated, but I couldn’t skip it. When I work out in my home gym, I put my earbuds in and listen to a variety of genres and songs. I don’t listen to just one genre or artist. It would also be nice to be able to create your own workout that includes maybe a low-intensity routine, medium intensity routine, AND a high-intensity routine. Having to pick one intensity, one music genre, and one trainer gets old. And God forbid the app ever freezes (it did frequently). There is no way to resume a workout you were just doing or at least skip song so that you can get to the point that you were previously at. To me that is elementary in terms of application development. There’s really no excuse for not having that option. If you can skip the warm-ups and cool downs, then you should be able to skip songs. But if you reach out to any of the Supernatural representatives about this, you will just get a scripted reply that the workouts are created by professionals and they should be followed accordingly. Give me a break. I think this is the beginning of a new world of exercise via virtual reality, and Supernatural has a decent foundation. But they are going to have to step it up before more competition comes out because subscribers will not keep paying for something that offers them no real variety or personalization. I can tell you that I will be actively looking out for new VR workouts. I feel no loyalty to Supernatural.

Look the article was pretty good, the problem is she played Supernatural like you should play Beat Saber. She used her wrists mostly. If she wants to rate it as a workout, she needs her power numbers to consistently be around 90% at least. Supernatural spreads out those targets for a reason. You are criticizing a user who spent enough time in the app to lose 22 lbs against Lori’s 30 days. You should rethink this attitude.

If anything, Lori was super excited to get her hands on Supernatural. So no, as the editor, I can absolutely assure you that she wasn’t ‘looking for negatives’. However, we pride ourselves on not shying away from criticising any issues we see with any of the titles we review. Sure, you can get a lot of exercise out of Supernatural, but the same applies for the other titles that Lori mentions, most of which do not try to squeeze a subscription out of users. Even Fitxr only recently shifted to that model to the disdain of many users.

It’s great to know that the Facebook page has a solid and supportive community, but you have to see that this has absolutely nothing to do with how we’d review or score a title.

As for Forbes and the NY Times, well, they’re not exactly known for their VR coverage! When they do cover VR, it’s either to delcare that it’s dying, or that it hasn’t caught on, or that they’re completely blown away with it (probably because they spent the last two years thinking it was dead).

Having said all that, we’re genuinely happy you’re enjoying it and feel that you’re getting your money’s worth 🙂

You’re welcome! Lori’s too busy to do many reviews, but when she does, it’s almost always a deep dive 🙂
